The building is
located just south of Union Square Park. The focus in the design of
the facade was to keep the revealing material dynamic by using
split-face and smooth-honed stone. We clad the first, third, fifth,
and top of the façade in honed stone while recessing the split-face
stone at floors two, four, and six. This allows the façade to be
perceived as a solid stone that has been carved away (floors 2, 4, and
6) to artistically reveal the layers beneath.Along
with the new materials we designed for the façade, we incorporated
Juliet balconies at the north corner of the façade—the corner closest
to the park. The large 8-foot-wide French doors we used at these
balconies opened inward, allowing the tenants to effectively open their
apartments onto the park.We
designed the interiors as two-bedroom apartments, which resulted in
very spacious units (about 2000sf each. Due to the length of the
building, we were also able to incorporate a home office into each
apartment that could conceivably be converted into a third bedroom.
The kitchen finishes are luxurious and modern, with stained maple
cabinets, basalt counter tops, and stainless steel appliances. In
addition, we incorporated the same stone used on the façade into each
apartment’s five-fixture master bathroom—the walls use a mosaic of the
stone while the floors use large full tiles.
