122 Community Arts Center

Firm
Deborah Berke Partners designed the addition and renovation of 122 Community Arts Center, a community- and performing-arts center in New York City's East Village. The center, which is currently under construction, will provide facilities for four organizations with deep roots in their respective artistic disciplines and the neighborhood: Painting Space 122, one of New York's oldest artists' residency programs and exhibition spaces; Mabou Mines, the eminent avant-garde theater company; Performance Space 122, one of New York's oldest Off-Broadway theaters; and AIDS Service Center NYC, which provides comprehensive programs helping local families.

The existing building, originally built in 1894, served as a public school until 1976. In 1977, Mabou Mines, Painting Space 122, and Performance Space 122 took residency; AIDS Service Center NYC became a tenant in 1992. Deborah Berke Partners designed a perforated-metal-clad addition to create a new public entry and path through the building. The architects are also extensively renovating and re-configuring the existing structure; in addition, they are creating new column-free rehearsal and performance spaces. The project is anticipated to receive LEED Silver certification upon completion and will create an environment of great exploration, innovation and risk-taking for all of the arts groups.
