This new wine store on Manhattan's Upper East Side provided an opportunity to explore the expressive potential of an otherwise utilitarian aspect of retail architecture--shelving. The shelving system developed specifically for this project is comprised of 182 unique folded metal boxes which stack brick-like as they wind through the store. Their faces push and pull as if following the surface of a twisted ribbon, punctuated by a secondary system of walnut display boxes.
Integral to the design process was the development of a project-specific fabrication method and system details. Custom software developed for this project and integrated directly with digital fabrication techniques allowed for a fluid workflow between architectural scales, from the overall layout to the smallest detail.
