The adaptive reuse of 118 James Street North has transformed a derelict former furniture store in downtown Hamilton into a mixed-use building, blending layers of history and heritage features juxtaposed with modern elements. A sleek new front façade of metal panels follows the original 1920’s window openings and patterns, incorporating a restored leaded glass transom. The project has become an iconic hub in Hamilton’s arts district, housing the Art Gallery of Hamilton’s Design Annex, CBC Hamilton, and Chuck Gammage Animation. TCA Architects’ studio is the dramatic focal space, a sleek loft that epitomizes the contemporary workplace as hearth and home.
