The 1+1=1 house is located on Pattanakarn Road, an urban residential area of Bangkok. This brief of this 650 sq.m. house is to design an accommodation for the young couple and husband’s family. This ‘extended family’ consisting of three generations: grandparents, parents and grandchild. With its diverse differences and multiple generations, the concept aims to create private spaces for all members, allowing them to live comfortably while still being able to interact with each other in this warm and cozy home.
From the brief, Poonsook Architects Co., Ltd. designed the house with three main functions: the first part is for the parents, the second part is for the grandparents, and the third part is the common area. This led to the arrangement of the building in a C-shape, with external walls enclosing the north, south, and west sides to create privacy. The C-shaped building layout optimizes natural light and cross ventilation and also creates an enclosed area in the middle that serves as a terrace and garden, while the building itself can block the afternoon sun.
The common area consists of parking space connected to the entrance hall. The pocket courtyard along the walkway to the house provide a green space before entering the house and also provide shade for the parent’s area on the second floor. The entry connects with 5 meter ceiling height dining area with large east facing glass folding door, there is the area where all family members spent time together.
An open plan of parent area on the north contains living room dining room and pantry stretched along courtyard. Large expanses glass sliding door help to dissolve interior/exterior relationship. Floating steel plate structure staircase leads to the hallway on the second floor, there connects with entry pocket garden. Second floor contains 2 bedrooms and working area.
The area for grandparents on the first floor includes a living room for grandpa that connects to grandma's kitchen. The living room can also connect to the central garden and has sliding glass doors facing east, providing privacy for the grandparents' living room while still allowing access to green spaces on the second floor, which includes a bedroom and a multipurpose room.
This 1+1=1 house thus meets the needs of extended families who desire private spaces, yet still have a central area for gathering and dining together. This fosters bonding and interaction within the modern family, which is rare in today's urban society where nuclear families are predominant.
