Sjölander
da Cruz Architects have released the first images of an exciting new
contemporary house, in Edgbaston, Birmingham. This
striking five-bedroom home has just received the go ahead from the Birmingham
City Council Planning Committee, and replaces an existing and dilapidated 1970s
bungalow on a site within the Selly Park Conservation Area.
The
design of the new house celebrates the diversity of building types in the area
through its unique appearance it continues the tradition of one off houses of
individual character within the Conservation Area, and responds to the wider
context of the rhythm of the Edwardian and Victorian villas.
To
maximise the use of this wide site, the building is split into two interlocked
blocks, service, and living. To
diminish the overall scale of the building, the mass has been broken down, with
the service element set back in the site, and each mass defined through its
scale and material. The
house uses a material pallet of slim grey bricks and white render that respond
tonally to those historically used.
Conceived
as two interweaved blocks folded as material origami, the mass of the brickwork
is envisaged as the strong supporting element, to the lighter rendered carved
block. The rendered sculptural element is folded to shelter the step in the
land responding to the typography of the ground.
The
site slopes down one storey from the front to the back of the site. We have used the topography of the site
to create a sunken swimming pool and gymnasium, with generous glazed openings
providing sweeping views of the garden. This
villa draws you through the ground floor living space towards the glazed rear
elevation, with its raised views of the Bournbrook stream at the rear of the
site. At the centre of this
building is a three storey light slot with a glazed lantern in the roof, scooping
light down through the glass staircase, and washing the internal walls with
daylight.
Inspired
by the desire to inhabit a truly crafted home, the clients have been the
driving force behind the modern approach to the design and layout of this one
of a kind home.
