The relocation of the main entrance of a 6-story building at 560 Broadway in New York City to carve out a new, expanded lobby around the corner at 100 Crosby Street required Lilker’s full MEP/FP engineering services and Lilker Lighting Group’s lighting design services.
The new lobby celebrates the unique architectural character of its surrounding neighborhood with materials and textures that showcase its industrial aesthetic. A new 14’ tall luminous feature wall was added and composed of backlit “bullet glass” – a material historically used in nearby sidewalks to bring daylight into basement spaces. Original large timber beams were removed, salvaged, and hung within the lobby to create a ceiling datum, as the floor was lowered several feet to align with the street level at the new entrance. Brick walls were exposed to reveal their warmth and character. Elevators were relocated and cabs illuminated solely with custom water-jet cut backlit feature walls that playfully relate to the lobby’s luminous bullet glass wall. Finally, a new 40-ft. long cantilevered iron and textured glass canopy grazed with light and backlit frosted glass added to street-facing service spaces foster a welcoming entrance.
