A complete re-construction of a 3-storey Chelsea town house in a modern international style hidden behind the retained and unaltered front elevation.
A unique planning consent: sensitive, contextual design and sustained political lobbying secured one of the only 'high modernist' consents in the Chelsea Conservation Area.
High modern Architecture: classical approach - dematerialising volume and mass by focussing emphasis on surface. The approach reinterprets and re-presents the broad mass of the rear elevations as a series of distinct panels floated on glass boxes. Fenestration is interpreted in a strong graphic combination of frameless and bold framed elements.
Innovative engineering: daylight penetrates from a huge rooflight over the stairwell right down to the basement. The smooth curved flights in pre-cast concrete were craned in through the rooflight and finished with deep projecting limestone treads and a single blade of frameless glass penetrates through the central slot over four storey's.
