Born in 1963, Australian Robert Watson completed two consecutive degrees at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, first in Industrial Design and then following with Architecture for which he was awarded Honors. Prior to establishing his practice, Robert gained valuable experience in London with Nicholas Grimshaw and then Norman Foster, working on some world renown projects such as Britain’s Pavilion for the 1992 World Expo in Seville, Germany’s Reichstag, and the City of Valencia’s Congress Centre in Spain. In 1997 Robert, who is registered to practice architecture in both the United Kingdom and Australia, established Robert Watson Architects Pty Ltd - now trading as watsonarchitecture+design, with the sole aim of producing high quality, elegant and simple design solutions that are technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable. The practice’s work ranges from architecture, infrastructure, industrial design, to experimental design and humanitarian projects, and has been recognised for its excellence in several significant awards including an Australian Design Award, and two international Red Dot Awards for Industrial Design, and the 2010 Australian Institute of Architects, National Award for International Architecture. Apart from Robert’s ongoing pro bono work for the Australian NGO, Food Water Shelter, the small flexible practice is currently working on several one-off residential projects, an ongoing infrastructure design, and product design. The office is also currently working in association with Seth Stein Architects of London on a large stables complex and residential project on Victoria’s peninsula.
