Relation of Environment and a Place to be
I ponder that to reside is to enclose human or a creature and to put them in an interactive environmental territory. There are various activities involving creatures' lives. When expanding the viewpoint, we realize a whole environment that is seamless from cities, forests, and the seas and from the earth to the universe, is a place for dwelling. The state of all creation, human and plants that live, and land's topography and atmosphere change every moment reminds us that there is no place without transformations. I would like to have a thought on the changes of nature that is a beating of the earth and a spatial territory that can be sensed in ordinary everyday lives.
Thoughts on Territory Created by Experiences
If a territory is an extension that human can relate, how far can a territory of architectural space be defined? On one hand, a single object complicatedly diverges and becomes concrete by differentiating the extent and the role by the languages of architecture, civil engineering, structure, mechanical equipment and landscape. On the other hand, there are abstract things that can be captured by a physical sense. I think the both act as a model in making architecture and a territory of architectural space or an environment exists where each element is not concluded by itself but where its boundary dissolves. Thinking in a physical sense,I remember the experience of playing in my grandmother's house in my younger days. There were mild sound of the SETO Inland Sea, sunlight and from a secluded mountain standing at the back throughout four seasons, sound of bugs, sunlight filtering through trees, waving branches and tranquility of deep night. Such close phenomenon and interactions with animals and plants existed in family gatherings through verandas. I preferred various elements' boundary spots and depending on the time played finding comfortable places such as thick tree shades in summer, cool wind under trees, sound of rainfall under eaves and good scented place. Indeed, I think I seized one connected space, responding to heat, humidity and wind by sense of skin towards outside environment. It was a formative experience long before consciously feeling interactive environmental territories.
Later, I graduated from university and spent five concrete years as a site supervisor. I myself practiced construction work such as earthwork, rebar assembly, plastering and carpentry, carpenter's skills and work forces on site with no distinction between civil engineering and architecture and various works' territory. I also experienced managing a site and creating things by considering rational decisions of cost control.
The hands-on experience was a model to connect design and the site without any discord to me, who did not have a teacher. Respecting workers, who contributed wisdom and devise guided by long experience, and on the other hand, devising workers' technique to realize innovative design, the collaborative process became my stance towards creation today.
Diversity towards Nature
Through such experiences I apprehended the whole in a large framework without particularly being conscious about boundaries of each categories such as architecture, civil engineering and landscape. That is, as if treating architectural materials,I handled civil engineering's natural materials and planting materials in equal importance. However, it was not to uniformly and conclusively capture nature by controlling it,but I felt rationality in the overlapping of all elements and landscape there. Diverse places exist in responding to exterior environment without regulating a territory. It can be found in architectural figures in accordance with nature, which can often be found in Japanese traditional houses. There exist an aesthetic sense and an essence that renews by accepting nature. Changing spaces are the Japanese architecture. A relationship that fluidly altering from inside to inside from inside to outside without interruption by composting elements and dimensions indeed create rich environment. It is, so to speak, the boundary spaces that architecture quietly comes in and stands by towards exterior space that shows different faces in four seasons.
Unregulated Spatial Territory
In “Atelier-Bisque Dolls" we reflected on a territory that secures privacy,at the same time opens towards outside like turning over ac courthouse,in a residential street. It is not a form that captures the whole from inside with surrounding boundaries by elements such as fences and walls, but is a form that was created from exterior that is like even the nearby green buffer as a spatial territory by extending the sphere of people's involvement a little more. The floating band freed from gravity surrounds the entire site and the architecture that is like the extension of outside was created, not as substantial in/out door territory. Further, in “Nest“ and “Pit House" by reconsidering the architectural comprising elements ; floors, walls and roofs, it was developed into one continuous space that environment and residence are wrapped. It is a composition that is loosely connected to nearby environment by half outdoor space like a veranda. The discontinued architectural elements that were differentiated such as floors, walls and roofs function as elements that connect non-separated architecture/environment when viewing them as an environmental whole. Spatial territories that are settled in place and created by responding to exterior environment resonate each other and develop.
That is, architectural spatial territories are environment that is not regulated but endlessly expands.
