SMP Architects (SMP) is a business corporation founded in 2007, developed out of an earlier firm,Susan Maxman Partners, Ltd., founded by Susan A. Maxman, FAIA. The firm is located in the heart of Philadelphiaat 1600 Walnut Street. The firm’s early work, characterized primarily by residential commissions, earned it a solid reputation for meeting design challenges with a flair for craftsmanship and attention to detail. This strong foundation, in concert with a talent for involving owners and users in the design process, has led the firm to attract clients from the non-profit sector. Community-based organizations, universities, educational and cultural institutions, and government agencies at the federal, state, and local levels form the base of the firm’s current and past clients. Work inhigher education includes buildings at The University of Pennsylvania,Penn State University, The Ohio State University, Kutztown University, and Bloomsburg University. In addition, the National Park Service, TheSchool District of Philadelphia, and the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources are all repeat clients. SMP has gained a national reputation as experts in sustainable design or “green” architecture by integrating environmentally sensitive technologies with appropriate architectural solutions. We design buildings that fit into their surroundings, are sensitive to user needs, and are in harmony with the community. By evaluating materials and systems that go into a project’s design in an effort to conserve natural resources, decrease environmental degradation, and create healthy buildings, we lead the way in planning now for future generations. SMP has received numerous design awards; most recently a 2011 Tristates Design Award and 2011 Citation of Merit from the Pennsylvania Chapter of the AIA for The Sustainable Urban Science Center at Germantown Friends School. The school, as well as TheNature Inn at Bald Eagle, were also finalists in the Environmental Design and Construction Awards.
