SKY CITY ARCHITECTS specialize in contemporary private homes. Established in 2014 by professional architect Philip du Toit, the firm investigates alternative and out-of-the-box concepts, questioning and pushing the limits of residential design.
Philip completed his Masters in Architecture degree (Professional) at the University of Pretoria, receiving the Johann Basson Energy Efficient Design Prize for his thesis being selected as the most energy efficient design. During more than eight years of work he gained ample experience in architectural design, being involved in all stages of the design and construction process. His interests include modernist forms, though not the cold, unpractical types of the original buildings, but of a more realistic, almost natural approach. Further fields of interest in architecture are minimalism, deconstructivism, context-related projects, environmentally responsible designs, the aesthetic use of functional elements (e.g. services) and property development and investment.
Besides working on various architectural projects, he has also been involved in numerous academic activities, including articles and books. He also presented the theory of 'three-dimensional sites' at the International Union of Architects World Congress in Durban in 2014. He acts as external examiner for Masters Degree students at the University of Pretoria and the Tshwane University of Technology on an ad hoc basis.
