Project on Spatial Sciences is a research and action group founded in 2009 at the Harvard Graduate School of Design. Rather than creating objects that stand frozen in the built environment, we make designs that carefully manipulate the volumetric and often invisible properties of space, such as sound, temperature, smell, and radio frequencies. This approach offers an entirely new palette with which to design. It also opens up new avenues of collaboration between architects and specialists from other fields. Through such collaboration, we pull together various kinds of knowledge in order to invent spaces that play a dynamic role in the lives of their occupants. Our broader mission is first to test various configurations of spatial properties and their effects, second to educate others about the resulting insights, third to develop industrial patents for new spatial technologies, and fourth to help clients connect with their publics by designing spaces that are both meaningful and engaging.
