One of Indonesia’s most prominent architects, Popo Danes, is passionate about harmony between culture and art. With over 80 projects accomplished since 1986, he always makes sure that his works get mature over time and values. Having read numerous great contemporary architects from the age of eight, who subsequently became his inspirations, the natural, born Balinese, origin exceptional architect has earned his reputation as the most influential architect in enriching Balinese contemporary architecture even prior to earning his first university degree.
At his own studio “Popo Danes Architect”, designed in an ambience to accommodate all creative activities for architects, Popo never objects sharing his vast knowledge and philosophy. His embedded knowledge of local wisdom is shown in his expertise in practicalities of building tropical habitations, few outsiders can claim. Popo thinks future maintenance of each building is vital for consideration. His own concept applies to the same studio, a house his father built in 1969, where today, 90% of the building is still original.
Popo left his signature buildings – private residences, restaurants, boutique hotels, villas, and resorts – in many parts of the globe, and especially in his beloved island of Bali, where he resides now. Having a combination of cosmopolitan competence and knowledge of local wisdom, he designs his buildings carefully to create the right structure, promoting harmony between human habitation and nature, preserving heritage and culture, to help the spirit grow in relation to both society and nature. From tranquil and traditional to modern and luxurious, he has shown the diversity of his flair.
Popo Danes continue unraveling the world of contemporary architecture with his budding talent. His generosity in sharing knowledge can be seen in his recently published book “New Regionalism in Bali Architecture”. Popo has earned several Indonesia’s architectural awards. In 2004 and 2008 he won the first prize for the ASEAN Energy Award for the category of Topical Building Construction Design Indonesia, and in he won Indonesia’s Construction Design in 2003 and 2009.
