The Paris based architectural firm NFA, has been for the last 15 years a leading figure of the French sustainable architecture and planning as well as in expertise and research on these issues. From the first HQE (High Environmental Quality) project built in France 1995 to recently positive energy buildings and numerous low energy projects, NFA’s team, consisting of 10 to 12 architects has always focused on most innovative projects regarding sustainability. The office has an intensive practice in developing and implementing systemic approach and believes that it is the only way to handle the complexity of sustainability in built environment both on urban and building scale. The team believes that a sole focus on energy efficiency certainly doesn’t lead to a sustainable built environment or society and that cultural valuesplay a strong role in a local context. Before all, sustainable development takes place in a sensitive local model of development. Far from beingconservative, this statement opens a widely creative path. Also, office experience leads to a radical and literal approach to “passive” solutions for building requiring for new urban design strategies.Familiar with reflexive open design process, with preliminary systemic approach prior to design and with pilot projects aiming at widespread, the office find in every strategic project vision a fruitful opportunity to implement its capitalized experience and knowledge.
