First established in London (1990), Kay Ngee Tan Architects has worked on numerous projects of various scales, types and has won numerous International Awards. In the process of their work, they seek to challenge conventions in deriving new approaches suitable for the culture, climate and geography of Asia & Europe.
In 2000 the office was involved in the winning entry for the Singapore Management University Competition. In 2001 they were one of the 12 architects selected to design villas for the Commune by the Great Wall in Beijing, China. This project has been published widely and also won the silver award at the Venice Biennale. In 2004, the office was selected to showcase their work in the Singapore Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In 2006, their design for the Kinokuniya book store, Sapporo, Japan won the Japan Design Award & 14th CS Design Award. In 2007, they also received the prestigious President’s Design Award. Following that the office was chosen to be the curator for the design pavilion at the Singapore Season in Beijing, China. In 2009, they won the competition to design the Singapore Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai, China.
Kay Ngee Tan Architects is currently working on projects in places ranging from Nagoya to Istanbul. The office has built and is presently working on various projects in China. Their proficiency in the Chinese language and deep understanding of its culture puts them in an outstanding position to communicate with mainland China.
The practice engages in a broad spectrum work in design and the arts. This ranges from architecture, interior, theatre, literature, photography, craftwork and curatorial work. It is the firm’s belief that design is a total involvement of all arts in life, in this broad inclusive manner the various activities can somehow enrich and inform one another.
