hughesumbanhowar architects (HUUM) is a full service practice with design studios in South Florida and Los Angeles. We create projects, buildings and objects for discriminating and engaged clients. The work we do is a reflection of our focus on craft, form and building technology in relation to our contemporary condition. Foremost in our design philosophy is a belief in the creative nature of design, the importance of rigorous research, the value of ingenuity and invention, and the social purpose of design. We view sustainability as an a priori condition, a responsibility to current and future generations.
HUUM has donated time and resources to local community causes since its inception in 2001. For the past several years we have augmented our participation in community building through our pro bono work for the 1% program and other entities, including the Drews Avenue Kitchen in Jamaica as well as the Watts House Project community development with artist Edgar Arceneaux.
HUUM has received 17 local and state AIA awards over the past 10 years in recognition of the high caliber of architecture we produce. Credit for these peer commendations stem from the innate creativity and ability of our firm Principals and design team to devise achievable solutions in the face of challenges as well as our intensely considered and collaborative process with client, builders and consultants. We
have most recently been the recipients of a prestigious 2012 PA Award for the Prairie Chapel.
We believe the act of creating architecture is equally important to the final product. Our work process and team organization emphasizes a “hands on” approach, with the added benefit to the client of the personal and direct involvement of the Principal-in-Charge regularly throughout all phases of the project--including both design and project management. We are good listeners, able to produce many options and solutions during the design phase. This approach has insured high standards of productivity and quality in our projects.
