Gabriel Hernández (Canary Islands, Spain) is an architect, curator, and scholar whose work focuses on design systems, curatorial practice, and the intersection of architecture, art, and the environment. His practice combines research, teaching, and curatorial projects connected to contemporary architectural culture.
He studies at ETSAM-UPM, Paris-La Villette, and the European Institute of Design, and is a Fulbright Scholar at Yale University and MIT’s History, Theory and Criticism of Art and Architecture Group.
As founding Head of Education and Research at the Norman Foster Foundation, he develops public and educational programs, research initiatives, and strategies for archives, publications, and exhibitions. Alongside this work, he combines design consulting, artistic project coordination, and collaborations with architecture studios across the Canary Islands, Madrid, and Paris.
His work bridges architecture, visual culture, research, and contemporary curatorial practices, with a particular interest in representation, cultural production, and environmental thinking in architecture. His work receives recognitions including the Thyssen Museum Drawing Award, the CAAM Artistic Promotion Grant, and distinctions such as the Docomomo US NY/Tristate Emerging Scholar and Research & Design Principles Scholar mentions.
Gabriel currently teaches Analysis at ETSAM-UPM and Digital Image at IE University, while also serving as invited editor at Scopio Network. He regularly lectures and participates as critic and juror at institutions including Yale University, MIT, Harvard RCC, IAAC, Architectural Association (AA), Manchester University, and the University of Porto.
His research and writings appear in publications such as Yale Constructs, CRAUP, Drawing Matter Journal, and RA-Revista de Arquitectura. In parallel, he develops curatorial and research projects focused on architectural representation, visual culture, and contemporary design systems.
His ongoing doctoral research, Mapping Design Systems, is developed within UPM’s Cross-Disciplinary Doctoral Program in Architecture and Urbanism with support from Fulbright Spain, Fundación Rafael del Pino, and the UPM North American Delegation.
