In all the
projects we search for pronounced shapes with aesthetic value. The
formation for any particular is determined firstly by asking a number of
questions; one of the most important of these pertains to the context with which the building is to
interact. Projects start with an intuitive approach that is then connected with
the more rational problemsolving aspect of architectural production. Many
shapes and formations have a strength that can be used as long as they are
processed in the right way. For example, the assembling of traditional forms
can be synthesised in a new cohesive manner in order to create new formations
that are as powerful as they are simple. The silhouette can be magical! We are
fascinated by the manufactured Dutch landscape, with the possibility of the
architectural profile, with processes of making and with the water.
The idea of
drawing sensuous forms against the constructed landscape is one that defines
our practice. In everything we search for the contrast, therefore we work with vectors that are fluid, graceful
and adaptable. Volume becomes more elastic, less striated. These adaptable
vectors have a lot to do with a type of material
philosophy whereby we discuss the driving conceptual force of the scheme
with builders, manufacturers and engineers in a fluid process that eventually
determines the outcome. The possibilities are rigorously explored in terms of
making; the form, use of materials and construction process is important in
synthesising the outcome. Sometimes we use traditional builders, at other times
ship builders are sought in order to realise the work.
