The building
The exhibition takes place at the Centre for Architecture and Design
founded by the Higher School of Art and Design in Łódź. The School
building, originally Karl Scheibler’s (German-Polish industrialist)
trade central office, was built in 1912. The building is an example of
a factory palace drawing on many styles and is typical for Łódź
industrial architecture.
The interiors (some of them remain in the original state; some others
were adapted for new functions) will serve as an expressive background
for the projects exhibited.Centre for Architecture and Design
Both architecture and design are disciplines of incredible dynamics in
terms of their formal and conceptual aspects. They are fascinating;
they’re worth keeping up with as well as analysing and popularizing.
Therefore, in March of 2011, we started preparations for creating the
Centre for Architecture and Design in Łódź: a research and design
institute. Our initial goal was to popularize the young Polish
architecture. Being conscious of the potential of architectural design
in the field of culture and the place branding process, we would like
to present the young Polish architecture. We want to submit Polish
architecture for analysis and discussion and we simply want to boast
about it. We also want to send a clear message that the architecture
and design in Poland have excellent perspectives for the future. We find it important to show a wide spectrum of architecture and
its innovative applications, also as an element of the place branding.
Like no other discipline, architecture seems to be an ideal means for
promoting Poland in the world. An important aspect of our endeavour is
to create a network of correlations between branding and architecture
and to show possibilities of its implementation in other areas (e.g.
marketing). For sure, it is an additional value of the newly
established Centre.
We find it obvious that the art of exhibition is supposed to ask questions in the first place rather than to provide answers.
We acknowledge that the diagnosis of needs, possibilities and
development directions is the key factor at the Centre for Architecture
and Design. We are also aware of the potential of the creative economy,
which is the one of the fastest growing branches of economy; thus, our
goal is to support and to develop architecture and design. We want to
take advantage of the rapid development of design areas and to promote
good design quality as a culture-forming factor.
When creating an institution, it has to have strong intellectual
foundations and clearly established guidelines and development
perspectives. Therefore, the functioning of the Centre is based on a
precisely developed strategy which will enable us to implement an
innovative programme in a consistent way.
Our goal is to create a place with the functions of an art gallery and
a consulting and promotional centre which will serve as a kind of think
tank focussed on a multi disciplinary art gallery combining the
disciplines of architecture, design and marketing.
