Floor Arons (1968) and Arnoud Gelauff (1963) work on diverse projects throughout the Netherlands, from a converted marine engineering factory in Amsterdam North, with a staff of some 20 people. Winning the Europan competition in Amsterdam Osdorp in 1996 was the go-ahead for founding the firm. This project was delivered in 2002, and since then ten others have followed. These include:
De Plussenburgh: a residential care complex with 104 apartments in Rotterdam
De Rokade: a high-rise apartment building with 74 residential care apartments, Groningen
CalandparC: three urban villas with a total of 48 apartments, Amsterdam
the Animal Rescue centre including 630 kennels, Osdorp, Amsterdam
154 subsidised rental apartments on the Adriaan Pauwstraat, Vlaardingen
250 stacked student dwellings and 1500 m² of commercial space, University of TwenteThe firm of Arons en Gelauff architecten is founded on a sober design philosophy. The initial designs are pragmatic and neutral in their formulation. The volume construction, the facades and the sections become extremely specific in the designs, allowing them to graft onto their surroundings in this way. The buildings obtain a strong character of their own, due to an alternation of neutrality and complexity. De Plussenburgh in Rotterdam accordingly developed into a colourful sculpture of 104 dwellings for the elderly, extremely flexible in its layout. Due to its massive spans, the complex could even be converted into a care home. The high-rise Rokade apartment building in Groningen has a cross-shaped ground plan that buyers can arrange in various ways. The volume is clad in a dazzling 'facade of holes'. The animal refuge centre in Amsterdam with its striking appearance – the metal hide is a green pixel version of the adjacent dike – is the largest in the Netherlands, and the University of Twente campus has been enlarged by a climbing wall as well as by 250 student dwellings. The firm recently began to work out the prize winning design for an eye-catching 240 houses on the southern shore of the IJ in Amsterdam: De Pontsteiger.Arons en Gelauff architecten believe they are able to produce the very best buildings by being involved in all phases of the process. This process is expertly supervised from the first sketch up to and including delivery.
