ABEL BAINNSON BUTZ, LLP (ABB), established in 1968, maintains a vital, varied, and fresh approach to site planning and landscape architectural design. The firm has undertaken a broad spectrum of commissions, including urban design, streetscapes, parks and recreational facilities, sports facilities, college campuses, housing, and commercial developments. ABB’s broad knowledge and depth of experience have made the firm an expert in analysis, planning, design development, contract document preparation, and construction administration.
ABB believes that landscape architecture is about connecting people with natural environments through the creation of meaningful, beautiful, and livable spaces that evoke memorable emotional responses. This is accomplished through good conceptual design, where successful solutions are extracted from the site, rather than the abstract. ABB brings extensive experience, commitment, and attention to detail to each and every project. The ABB approach is personal, purposeful, and productive.
ABB’s work has been recognized not only by project clients and users but also by ABB’s professional peers: a testament to our standards for quality and imaginative design approach. Our projects are successful because we realize client goals within budget, without compromising creativity. By making public spaces more personal, by humanizing the urban landscape, and by respecting the environment, people, and architecture, ABB creates work that continually broadens the boundaries of landscape architecture.
Over the years, ABB has been a steady leader in helping to introduce sustainable design features throughout the city wherever permitted by regulatory agencies. As the interagency climate has begun to shift with the adoption of city-wide sustainability guidelines and initiatives, ABB is assisting its public sector clients in capitalizing on interagency cooperation toward sustainable design practices.
ABB’s design achievements include recognition from the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA) for our work at Riverbank State Park, Hudson River Park, Schaefer Esplanade, Queens West Stage II, and 1095 Avenue of the Americas. Hudson River Park also received a national Award for Excellence from the Urban Waterfront Center as well as Landscape Project of the Year from New York Construction News, and most recently, Queens West Stage II received an Honor Award from The Waterfront Center. ABB is proud of the honors received from our professional peers and the Civic and Municipal Community including the New York Public Design Commission and the Municipal Arts Society of New York. Our projects have been published in a range of publications including Landscape Architecture Magazine, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.
