The Komera Leadership Center in Rwanda’s eastern province offers health, education, and mentorship for young women and serves as a community hub. Located near the village football pitch, it’s a focal point for residents.
At the building’s core is a flexible space, adaptable to various community needs. Translucent panels enable its transformation: closed, they form three classrooms; at 90 degrees, a meeting hall; and when fully opened, a space for larger events. Adjacent storage supports these transitions. The design, featuring a vast roof, woven eucalyptus screens, and unique brick patterns, draws from the local “Imigongo” art, reflecting the center’s name “Komera” – meaning “to stand strong”.
In collaboration with Rwanda Village Enterprises (RVE), the center was built using local materials and workforce, boasting 40% female participation. This provided training, income, safety equipment, and valuable construction skills, while community input was crucial from start to finish.
