The Jiuzhaigou Visitor Service Facilities by Architectural D & R Institute of Tsinghua University are located at the entrance of the Jiuzhai Valley National Park, within the Jiuzhaigou World Heritage Site. The project seeks to become a new landmark for the area and an anchor for local tourism. Built as a reconstruction project after a destructive earthquake, the Architectural D & R Institute team worked closely with experts in landscaping, engineering, ecology and tourism to record and evaluate how the site could be used post-earthquake.
The project explores how artificial construction can accommodate natural scenic spots. It achieves the requirements of the multifarious tourism functions while having a minimal environmental impact on the world heritage site. The general aerodynamic architectural language blows the narrow triangular site smoothly, congealing the visitor center with a sprawling and smooth curved form, which spatially echoes surrounding mountains through the continuous terrain guidance and its structural shape. The project gives a new meaning to ‘landform architecture’ thanks to a dynamic building still deeply rooted in local indigenous culture.
