This Ribbon-Like Envelope Offers a Twist on Typical Courtyard Typologies

Architizer Editors Architizer Editors

In 2018, Peter Pichler Architecture won a competition to design a new villa to replace an old structure in Italy’s Kastelaz vineyard. The site, nestled within mountain valleys, a vineyard and a forest and close to Caldaro Lake, provided a 360-degree landscape view that the firm could not ignore.

The ribbon-like structure ultimately conceived creates an internal courtyard that offers protection from the strong wind from Garda Lake while allowing residents to bask in the sweeping views. The external materials mirror the texture and color of the chalkstone walls from the surrounding vineyards, thus paying homage to the area’s agriculture.
