The Creativity and Innovation District at Virginia Tech by Hanbury
Architectural Videographer of the Year, Special Mention, Vision Awards 2023
“Architecture is more than a building. Consider people, emotions, experiences…
At Hanbury, it’s our role to help tell the story; the story about people—about how design can transform a community. We focus on documenting the big idea along with those moments that are sometimes lost behind the scenes. All our in-house videographers have professional degrees in architecture and have roots in the profession.
We utilize filmmaking as a tool for client storytelling, internal documentation, and to innovate and establish new standards in the architecture field. Videography has become part of our culture at Hanbury, never an add-on. We’ve learned that videography is another communication tool and a way to bridge the gap between our profession and the public by decrypting architecture-speak. As architects and designers, we must be community builders.
We firmly believe that to improve the cities in which we work, we must include the residents in the design process; it’s the first step. Community activation comes before construction. We utilize short films to reach out to the community for fundraising with projects like “Dream Center” or “Kappa Park” or to build hype and buzz around a project soon to be constructed like “Atlantic Park.” With “CID,” we focus on the people–the staff and students whose lives were transformed by the opportunities of a new place. With films like these, we’re reminded why we became architects at the start, to catalyze growth and positive change. Too many little moments and client interactions are lost along the way, and our mission is to shine a spotlight on the design process in its entirety. We find the spark behind the project and simply place that in front of the lens.”
