The Flow Bridge is a modular, composite (FRP) system enhancing safety at UK level-crossings. Offering flexible configurations, its first ‘S’ configuration was unveiled near Craven Arms, Shropshire in January 2023.
Tasked with crafting a bridge that was economical, lightweight, and swift to produce, the team designed the Flow Bridge prioritising user experience, safety, and aesthetics.
The bridge combines a modular deck with a supporting spine connected via a ‘gravity clamp’. Its design removes the typical sharp turn at stair-tops, offering better visibility.
The glazed parapet ensures clear views while maintaining safety standards.
The spine’s ‘V’ piers contrast the deck’s flow, paralleling the tracks. Made with natural flax fibres, it features embedded fibreoptic monitoring.
Set for full production, the system will offer multiple moulds for diverse sites and needs. Estimated to cost 40% less and weigh 50% lighter than standard bridges, it promotes eco-friendly and time-efficient installations.
