Future Fest: Koichi Takada Asks What Should Future Architecture Be Made Of?

Architizer Editors Architizer Editors

Our roles as architects have never seemed so relevant in light of the challenges that face us today. The future depends on us dreaming big; plants and nature will play a pivotal role. Questioning the loss of nature in cities opens up new possibilities in architecture and design. It is in nature, we find our ability to regenerate and the tools to adapt to the changing environment. Once we recognize that our wellbeing is intrinsically linked to our natural environment, we are more inclined to conserve that environment and be better stewards for generations to come.

In this wide-ranging live talk, renowned architect Koichi Takada demonstrates how his practice, the A+Award-winning Koichi Takada Architects, puts these principles into practice. Takada reveals the details behind the LEED Platinum Urban Forest project, Solar Trees and the Tian An Masterplan, the National Museum of Qatar Gift Shop in Doha, Qatar, and the climate positive Sunflower House in Le Marche, Italy.

During this talk, you’ll learn:

  • How architects can learn from nature, with inspiration found in function, form and new materials.
  • About the power of architects to influence the reversal of climate change.
  • How the future of urban environments can be led by biomimetic architecture.

About Koichi Takada

Koichi Takada belongs to a new generation of architects that strive to bring nature back into the urban environment — an approach he matured after living in cities: Tokyo, New York and London. Koichi established his practice in 2008. He has brought a Japanese sensibility to Australian Architecture, each project embodying his commitment to organic form and consideration for human experience.

Through a series of award-winning designs, the growing practice is gaining an international reputation, with projects in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Tokyo, Shanghai, Los Angeles, Doha and Mexico City. Koichi’s emphasis is on a connection to nature, on humanizing and naturalizing the urban environment. He has invested himself in forms of architecture that speak to local landscapes, heritage, and traditions. Koichi accepts and encourages a sensitive connection to nature, surroundings and elicits an emotional response from users. Koichi Takada clearly sees a new beginning in a Post-Covid time, when naturalizing architecture will be the way forward, empowering the next generation that follows.
