From Forest to Sacred Space: Capturing the Spirit of the Famous Thorncrown Chapel

Religion and philosophy teach us that there exists an impassable gulf between the human and the divine that can never be reconciled.

The idea of pilgrimage, then, is such that one must experience the true width of that divide – spatially, in our physical world – in order to appreciate it. It is well then that Thorncrown Chapel should have been intended as a pilgrimage chapel, because what Spirit of Space accomplishes with this film is showing us just that: the scale of the divide between the human and the divine.

The verticality, the interlaced cross-bracing overhead and out of reach, the glittering ambient soundtrack, and the sharp contrast between the human scaled shots and the loftier drone shots endear this irreconcilable distance.

Yet, never is the viewer made to feel insignificant, or lesser, but rather invited and welcomed as a benevolent intelligence would, hopefully, want us to feel.
