“The new Sydney Fish Market will establish a world-class “foodie” destination. The project seeks to set in place an exemplary example of integrating the public realm and contemporary market space that will become a landmark in Sydney’s unique harbour-based urban landscape. The market will be fully operational fish market maintaining a part of the authentic industry at the waterfront and making it accessible to the public.
The building can be characterized as a sweeping timber-and-aluminium roof floating over the building like a canopy, giving the building an iconic presence along the harbour. Beyond design, the roof has four primary efficiency and sustainability attributes: shading, daylighting, ventilation, collection of rainwater and the possibility for solar cells harvesting.
The roof’s triangular openings allow abundant natural light into the building, while their orientation shades the building from the harshest direct sunrays. The market has been designed to be as permeable as possible to maximise natural ventilation and minimise the need for air conditioning. The plazas at each ends of the fish market allow for informal gatherings and contemplative recreation – to create more connections between the public and the water – and house wetland flora to filter both stormwater and grey water from the building and provide a protective habitat for local birds while filtering the immediate site water run-off.
The new Sydney Fish Market is on a 3.6-hectare site at the head of Blackwattle Bay.
