The project is located on the ecological protection land along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River in China. The site of the project was once a large refuse landfill, and now became an outdoor education place for students after an implementation of ecological restoration. Jiangzuo Studio received the commission from Wuhan Wenke ecological Environment Co.,Ltd to built a pavilion in the site for students. The design concept of the Phoenix Pavilion is based on green ecology, and an integration of Chinese traditional culture and modern technology. The project uses bamboo as the main built material. Bamboo is a natural material that can be found everywhere in China, which is environment-friendly and economical. Hot bending technology was used to shape the bamboo forming a large-span arch structure. The phoenix pavilion was open and elegant, just like a phoenix spreading its wings, which is inherited from the features of the traditional Chinese ancient pavilion. The roof was made of bamboo strips, which could be adapt to the local hot climate, and brings fantastic light and shadow. The joints of the bamboo structure are anchored by steel members to ensure firmness and durability. The steel components could be replaced separately to facilitate maintenance. Metal material could be recycled, and bamboo material could be dissolved naturally in the future, thus the concept of sustainable development could be put into effect. The pavilion was completely built by college students. We hope this pavilion would provide an interesting outdoor space to children, where they can have intimate contact with natures.
