Casa Horizonte is a private residence perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean in Chamela, Mexico. The house sits on a 10,000 square-foot property, surrounded by a beautifully raw and almost untouched landscape. The house was designed to disappear and meld into the landscape. The common living spaces of the home were designed to accentuate different features of the landscape and surroundings.
The main living room is shaded under the roof, while the second living room is on the axis of the stunning sunsets. A third common area for gathering is on the roof, which was designed for star-gazing and celebrating the Cosmos. The fourth gathering area is at the edge of the cliff, which provides a picnic area shaded under a tree. The house is made up of five bedrooms, in addition to a two bedroom addition for live-in staff.
The bedrooms are treated like individual suites or cottages, though the rest of the house is very open. The master bedroom has a view of the open ocean, and the guest bedrooms all frame a different moment of the ocean and landscape. The bedroom under the pool, near the edge of the cliff, faces the ocean at the cove where it foams and crashes against the cliff.
The rooms of the house do not have glass windows, as the glare from glass on the ocean has proven to have negative effects on birds and other wildlife.
The internal temperature is managed through the natural breeze and constructed shade, as the climate is very hot and arid. The roof of the gate house has solar panels that produce enough energy for the entire property to remain off-the-grid. The potable water is also purified for reuse in a vertical herb garden in the house, while the outside garden is filled with native plants which are adapted to little water..
