Flat-roof homes are relatively rare, but that’s about to change. As it becomes easier to design flat-roofs that drain and insulate as reliably as sloped roofs, flat-roof homes are poised to become the future of residential architecture — and FAKRO is at the forefront of this transition. By virtue of their application, skylights inherently provide soft beautiful light in otherwise dark interior rooms. FAKRO flat-roof windows improve on this opportunity in a number of ways. First, a variety of models offer flexibility in both use and aesthetics. Flat-roof windows (F series) feature a clean modern sleek look, while D_F type windows boast ColourLine customization with frames in any RAL classic hue. The D_F series are available in non-standard sizes from 60-centimeters square to 120 by 220 centimeters, enabling ease of replacing existing skylights that do not meet current thermal insulation requirements.

FAKRO flat-roof windows come in both fixed and operable models. Operable models can be opened up to 30 centimeters (12 inches), allowing pleasant natural air and ventilation inside a flat-roof home. The DEF model, for example, electronically opens and closes via a handheld remote or wall switch and includes a sensor that automatically closes the skylight if it starts to rain. The comparable DMF model is easily opened and closed manually with a telescopic control rod.

In addition to ventilation, FAKRO flat-roof windows also offer considerable control over natural light. Internal and external shades can be specified with both flat and domed skylights. External shades, which are most efficient at controlling heat gain, can operate automatically to maintain a desired level of insulation while also being controlled from a remote or wall switch. Internal blinds can be specified in a variety of fabric types and patterns, allowing for unique interior design opportunities, and can be electronically or manually operated.

As with any type of fenestration, a key concern when designing rooms with skylights is how well they insulate. FAKRO flat-roof windows set the standard in this regard by using a minimum of three glass layers, resulting in a highly efficient reduction of heat loss or gain, depending on the season. With the option of specifying up to six layers of glass for ultra high-performance insulation, FAKRO units can achieve U values as low as 0.64 for an entire skylight assembly. Used in combination with laminated glass layers, FAKRO flat-roof windows can also secure against burglary while greatly reducing the transmission of outdoor noise.

The most valuable aspect of FAKRO flat-roof windows is their potential to enhance special applications like roof decks and green roofs. FAKRO’s DXW model is a highly innovative application for rooftop terraces because it can be installed flush with the surface level of a roof deck. The DXW’s sash, frame and glazing are specially strengthened to bear the weight of people standing on it and are also treated with a powerful nonslip coating that makes for an appropriate walking surface. These features allow the DXW to handsomely integrate with the surface of any roof deck, providing both an attractive terrace above and natural light for the rooms below.

FAKRO flat-roof windows are adaptable to green roofs with a substantial growing medium. All FAKRO flat-roof windows can be specified with an extension that raises its profile 15 centimeters (6 inches) to allow for a green roof’s insulation, drainage and planting material. This configuration is especially versatile, as two FAKRO extension bases can be stacked on top of each other, raising the skylight’s profile a full 30 centimeters (12 inches) above the roof surface. The ability to easily integrate with green roofs allows the value of a skylight to be added to the already substantial benefits gained from the insulation, usable outdoor space and pleasing aesthetics of a planted roof.

A further special application for FAKRO flat-roof windows is possible by specifying modifications for smoke ventilation in the event of a fire. FAKRO’s DSF and DSC models are equipped with an operable frame, which typically opens to 23 centimeters (9 inches) for standard interior ventilation while raising the skylight’s sash up to 50 centimeters (20 inches) if a fire occurs. Providing up to 1 square meter (10.7 square feet) of ventilation area, FAKRO’s special smoke ventilation models are perfect applications for providing everyday ventilation with the added ability to meet stringent code requirements in case of a smoke emergency.
