Phaidon’s architecture books have long been praised as tomes of unique projects, presented clearly for curious architecture-lovers across the globe. In Phaidon’s latest release — a partnership with Architizer’s celebrated A+Awards program — the acclaimed publisher has bound the winning projects of the 2016 season into a beautifully crafted hardcover book, on sale on the Phaidon platform. It’s the perfect gift for your favorite architect, architecture student, design enthusiast — or yourself!
In its fourth edition, the A+Awards featured even more categories, and prizes awarded by both a jury and through a system of public voting. This year’s winners include a gallery of signature firms like Zaha Hadid Architects, SOM, Olson Kundig, Gensler, Bohlin Cywinski Jackson and more. While the precision of engineering and material research can be attributed to the experience of these firms, many other younger architects also made their mark with the A+Awards jury, a panel of over 300 experts.
Among them, we can think of Raad Studio and their ecological solutions for the Lowline Lab, a jury winner in both the Architecture + Self-Initiated Projects and Architecture + Technology categories, as well as a popular winner of the latter …
… or the group of students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong School of Architecture, who built an exquisite bamboo pavilion for the creation of an interactive public square in Kowloon. The ZCB Bamboon Pavilion was a jury-winner in the Architecture + Wood category, as well as a popular winner in the Architecture + Engineering category.
Another student group — the Colorado Building Workshop of the University of Colorado Denver — won the jury prize for Private House XS, for a project building Colorado Outward Bound School Micro Cabins.
The A+Awards are a chance for everyone to have a voice, whether it is through the architects that enter their projects into the competition, or the thousands and thousands of public votes supporting them throughout the world.
Projects like the Restoration of the Matrera Castle in Spain by Carquero Arquitectura brought controversy into the spotlight, as the public voted Carlos Quevedo Rojas’s much discussed restoration work as the best in the Architecture + Preservation category.
All of the above-mentioned firms have the opportunity of remembering this special recognition as their projects become part of another one of Phaidon’s architectural publications. The book is a comprehensive look at the winning projects, and the firms behind them, representing countries all around the world and the latest award-winning technological improvements to architecture and design.
