If you thought LEGO bricks were simply for building castles and forts and that one object you could never get quite right, it’s probably a good time to reevaluate your relationship with these multicolored construction bricks. Devoted DIY aficionados have already figured out how to make lots of things with LEGOs: lamps, vases, key holders, tables, and lots of other admittedly cool things. But, what if the bricks themselves weren’t used for building, but became a vessel to create other objects?
On HomeMade Modern’s Youtube channel, in a video titled How to Make DIY Concrete Nesting Tables with LEGOs, Ben Uyeda demonstrates just that, as he shows viewers how to transform the LEGO into a mold for a pair of concrete nesting tables. Ben takes DIY furniture building to a whole new level when he takes a bunch of the toy building bricks and stacks them into a squared U-shaped structure, filling the frame with Quikrete cement. (By the way, you may need to embed additional supports into the concrete in order to make the furniture stable under pressure, if you decide to do this yourself.)
The resulting tables, once they are painstakingly freed from their brick encasing, are modest and pockmarked with LEGO’s signature rivets — the product is actually pretty fantastic.
Perhaps DIY LEGO furniture — made with LEGO, not out of them — will be all the rage in hipster households all over the country. Or, maybe the thought of taking off each LEGO to reveal the concrete tables beneath is too much? Either way, we’re pretty sure LEGO-chic furniture is in.
