This kindergarten is designed around the concept of Nga Hau E Wha, a Maori proverb about the four winds, being symbolic as a meeting place for people from all backgrounds. The idea translates into a circular building structure, where four classrooms (symbolizing the four winds in the proverb) are arranged around a central meeting space.
Taking inspiration from the stream that forms the site boundary, the curve of the building roots it firmly in its location while exploring connections and interactions. The classrooms, featuring full-length glazing, enhance a sense of space and light and encourage visible and physical connections among children. The design incorporates environmental considerations like natural ventilation and daylight, benefiting the children’s health. It also includes shared art studios and bathrooms, a reception area by the car park, and a green roof with a timber canopy that blends with nature.
