This Unique Holiday Home is Hidden on a Remote Dutch Island

Architizer Editors Architizer Editors

“Ferskûle”, a term in Frisian that translates to “hidden,” inspires the tranquil retreat located on Schiermonnikoog, the easternmost inhabited Dutch Wadden island. Designed as a sanctuary for an active family, the concept of “Ferskûle” manifests in the home’s array of serene relaxation spots.

Key features include a lounge-worthy bay window, a central cooking table, a sunken living room with a fireplace and a study offering panoramic views. The 110 m2 house also hosts bedrooms with starry skies and an intimate outdoor seating pit. Its visible foundation anchors the home and shields the timber structure. Drawing inspiration from the island and the Wadden Sea, the materials used form a harmonious blend, featuring a sturdy exterior and warm, velvety interiors.
