With their Singapore Residence project, Neri&Hu explore how notions of communal living and collective memory can be expressed spatially. The original site featured a lushly vegetated edge, a feature the designers retained, that forms a natural green buffer along the perimeter. The new two-story house organizes all communal spaces around a central garden, occupying the courtyard space as a memorial garden for the family’s matriarch. The ground level, meanwhile, faces this green area with expansive glass walls connecting all spaces to the gardens along the edge of the site.
As such, Neri&Hu aims to maximize visual transparency from the communal areas — notably the living room, open kitchen, dining room, and study — so that its inhabitants may look into the central memorial garden while being cocooned by the dense vegetation surrounding the house.
