Haikou International Duty Free Reception Center – This project is located in the city of Haikou, China. The primary function of this project is to serve as a reception center and showroom for a large tax free mall in the city.
Architizer chatted with Larry Wen, Design director at aoe, to learn more about this project.
Architizer: What inspired the initial concept for your design?
Larry Wen: The initial idea of this project is to create a high class architecture to attract high end business owners. The clean and modern presence of this project delivers the ideas of contemporary commercial business. The white walls are intersecting with each other to have a sense of corporation. The openings on the walls bring the natural light into the building to create a pleasant felling in the spaces.
This project won in the 10th Annual A+Awards! What do you believe are the standout components that made your project win?
The color of the walls is carefully selected to work with the local climate. The walls are intersecting, stacking, penetrating to create the various experiences. Shadows are casted on the walls at different period of time. The texture of the wall is inspired by the texture of the texture on local palm tree’s tree trunk.
What was the greatest design challenge you faced during the project, and how did you navigate it?
The greatest challenge of this project was to develop the concept and design document in a very tight schedule and how to balance the budget, design and construction quality.
