A space placed
between the perception of the "natural" (real life) and the
"virtual" (film) is unquestionably a "transitional space". Shaping the
boundaries of the “transitional" is the aim of this project.
The idea of
transition is inherent in the original design of the ‘Russia’ cinema.
·
The theatre’s lobby is placed at an intermediate
level, between the ground and the sky - an apt architectural gesture which adds
the 3rd dimension (z axis) in the perception of
"transition".
·
The canted planes of the roof and of the monumental
stairway, guide to the entrance level: both are of equal importance, since they
function in similar ways, depending on where you are coming from.
·
The stairway is a clear architectural expression of
"transition" – the steps are the beat.
If movement is one
issue to deal with in a "transitional space", formation of images and
mechanisms of perception is certainly another:
·
Juxtaposition of different images for a certain time
on the human mind defines one’s perception, as Eisenstein noted.
·
Juxtaposition of basic colours creates the whole colour
range, and colour is the basic element of perceiving an image.
Taking under
consideration all of the above, we decided to use as our working tools the linear element of the step that
signifies movement and the juxtaposed
RGB colour planes that constitutes the image.
“3” is the number which gives the rhythm, as it
constitutes the common divisor of the dimensions of all the suggested
architectural elements.
