The city of Patras is located in the western coast of Greece and is now one of the biggest ports of the country. Throughout the centuries, the city developed and expanded towards the sea due to its strategic position and its industrial and commercial port. Therefore, its main industrial facilities were allocated along its coast. Our selected building complex is one of those factories that remains not functional and abandoned for the last 20 years, and is situated exactly opposite the area where the new port will be constructed. Our main purpose is to connect the city with the port through this complex by incorporating and introducing new functions, buildings and public spaces into it. To achieve that we decided to demolish some of the old buildings, already in a very poor condition, to preserve the most important ones, and to construct new ones that are going to serve as landmarks not only for the port but for the city as well. As a first move, we submerge the coastal highway, elevate the rail tracks and establish a new train station in our site, in order to facilitate the connection and transportation opportunities between the city and the port. The main factory building is now converted into a museum about paper and the industrial history of Patras. This factory was the biggest of its kind in the country and although abandoned its machinery still remains. Some of that is preserved inside the museum whereas the rest of that becomes a part of an open air exhibition and walkthrough.
