At present three large dams are being constructed at each inlet along the perimeter of the Venetian Lagoon. This is a huge scale engineering project which has been met with much opposition and is considered highly controversial in the rich cultural and historic context of Venice. Many people regard this engineering project as aesthetically insensitive and the project engineers/designers have gone to great lengths to ensure that the floodgates are "invisible" (submergible) when not in use. My current project aims to re-interpret this newly articulated perimeter by inserting an "acoustic barometer" which also has the capacity to act as a space for acoustic performance. As I research further into the ways we understand space through sound, I intend to propose an architecture which not only broadcasts the climatic conditions at the edge of the new sea defence structures, but also transforms to provide an intimate listening space where the vast scale of the engineering project can be re-interpreted. This is very much a work in progress and I'm currently exploring it's complexities through a series of representational and 1:1 models and drawings. You can keep track of my progress right HERE
