Rock Reach House, by Blue Sky Building Systems, is the first home built using the revolutionary Blue Sky Frame (patent pending), which is made from cold-formed, light-gauge, galvanized steel (as opposed to the traditionally used wood and/or structural steel). Not only does the house boast a host of green features but the innovative building technique is one of the most eco-friendly on the market. Unlike most prefab homes, all the steel elements (which are manufactured with up to 70% recycled metal) were factory-fabricated and shipped flat to the construction site, where--erector-set-like--they were rapidly bolted together without expensive site-welding or waste. The entire frame went up on Day One without a dumpster in sight! The house was weatherproof and ready for interior work by Day Five. Construction was complete and ready for move-in within eight weeks. The home's exterior walls consist of snap-into-place panels of expanded polystyrene with light-gauge steel studs. Because the house sits on a series of peripheral steel columns (again, unlike traditional home-building) there was no need for interior walls to be load-bearing, which allowed for virtually any interior floor plan. Wide open space, high ceilings, walls of glass. Literally anything was possible. The absence of structural wood makes the house more resistant to fire, mold, rot, termites, and earthquakes. The Blue Sky Frame is especially adept in steep terrain, and this ability to build either on a flat slab or off-grade avoided expensive earthwork, leaving only a very light footprint on the land. Best of all, since galvanized steel requires no paint and will never rust, the home is almost maintenance-free. Simply put, nothing is built faster, stronger, greener, more flexible, or more durable. The house sits amid a jumble of fantastically weathered boulders in a national park-like setting in the private community of Rock Reach in the Town of Yucca Valley near Palm Springs, California. Taken together, the house and the setting offer a High Desert escape second to none.
