“Plattenbauten” – grid-architecture “par excellence” – failed both as
the supposed man-made utopia and as a vision of the diversity inherent in
modular design (consisting of grid and module) because of their realisation
within the planned-economy system. These buildings combine construction and
façade decoration, so that the grid is at once constitutive and decorative. The
calculus of efficiency is evident in the apparently infinite repetition.
I
explore the extreme effects of this architecture in my installations: the
alarming brutality of endless repetition and of the fascinating aesthetics of
structural and serial patterns. Through the multiplication and recomposition of
serial architectural elements I develop new perspectives, surreal spatial
impressions and spatial confusion. The installations oscillate between
photographic documentation and artistic artefacts, between authenticity and
deception. They intensify the interplay of minimal and ornamental aesthetics
and endless monotony.
