Parklet is a private initiative to take back public space in a very efficient and pacific way, in order to generate a better quality of life for the inhabitants of the city.
The strategy is to use the parking spots on the streets to place on it Mobile Parks. Considered as vehicles for its wheels, its license plate and its backlights, the Mobile Parks respect the traffic code and can be easily moved. The purpose is the recovery of the street as a pedestrian place, just the way the automobile has already appropriated the city.
Thanks to the initiative and petitions of the Foundation “Más Espacios”, the Parklet has been transiting different boroughs of the city. From one place to another the local differences have been very clear.
The parklets are now being used as an urban element or urban furniture that gains space against the street to put in a temporary green spot instead.
The appropriation of the Parklet has been very diverse among the different places. It has been used for children parties’ celebrations; as an extension of food establishments; or just as a picnic spot for the people who worked on the zone. The Parklets are an example of public and private collaboration, because they’ve been moving around the city just as the Boroughs have been asking for them.
Today, the Parklets have toured five Boroughs in strategic spots, causing positive reactions among the pedestrians, shopkeepers, and even drivers.
The final purpose is to persuade people to think positive about the potentials of the city and give them consciousness of the actual power of civil initiatives, by encouraging them to embrace good habits and cohabitation behavior, educating them in a sustainable way to adopt public spaces.
