The assignment is to generate ideas for an Open Fort that facilitates innovation in the cultural, social and economic domains. It should be an Open Fort that does not turn its back on the surroundings but, rather, has a stimulating effect on them.Architecture, urban design and landscape architecture are all involved in this assignment. An integral approach that draws on the different disciplines can result in an appealing and realistic proposal. The site was located at the tip of Grasweg in Amsterdam North (see attachments). The area borders De Groene Draeck, a slipway that has been converted into a work building, and the raised fixed bridge across the Tolhuis Canal that connects Grasweg to the ferry across the IJ. It is a strategic location close to the waterfront on the north side of the western banks of the IJ and located in an area where so much is currently happening (extension to Shell research campus, the new Film Museum, development on the former NDSM site). The plan for the Tip of the Grasweg is a site development in the urban transformation plan drawn up by the City of Amsterdam for the Buiksloterham (BSH). The objective of this plan is a gradual transformation of the obsolete industrial site into an intensive residential and employment district on the north bank of the IJ. The rule is that on each site developed with housing, a substantial part of the programme must be maintained or reserved for works or (cultural) amenities. The industrial history forms both a source of inspiration and a frame of reference, also for the architectural idiom. Furthermore, the ambitions in the field of sustainability are significant and among the highest in the city. The city wants to gradually create a green cycle and pedestrian route along the banks of the IJ. Development on riverside sites never exceeds 30 metres in height. Taller development is only possible in the “second line”, along the Johan van Hasseltkanaal.“Leading light” represents conception about Open Fort:- to be sign element guiding the migrants;- to guard from intrusion;- to be symbol of sustainability and robustness;- to be starting-point of social life- to be open to variability.Lighthouse in itself is sturdiness and secluded space. So as not to isolate oneself from surroundings and depress them, it is subtracted like peaces of pie to open for views, connections, to interact with neighborhoods. In the same time to attach some lightness, a vector for activities in association with sails. We make an attempt to combine two different contexts:- The riverbank zone to be open towards city center and river IJ; It’s interpreted like the like origin of the district renovation;- The referring to the historical industrial past. The “Leading light” towering above the fort symbolizes a bearing and reliability. Sails symbolize the openness to fair winds. The building up programme worked over different levers, from the Mаster plan to design, turned to emphasize the main value of the area, the organic dynamism of intensification and colouring. Not to make overwhelming directing structure but to restore the relation between work and housing, that disappeared along with the disappearance of shipbuilding and industry :VOLUME PLANNING LEVERIn general the site plan to provide for the different height buildings with the organization of aerial spaces, which are orientated towards the main city accents:- City core – the urban center;- Waterfront - Visual and material connections the central part of Amsterdam with its Nothern part – three passages across plots in the area.PLANNING LEVERLighthouse shape 39 metres height, that is placed on the the tip of the Grasweg, provides accent towards the water. This multifunction complex contains hotel, apartments with exposing views to waterfront, public facilities (under water restaurant, jims, lounge zones in the solid part), which are connected indirectly through the atrium “split”. It is the point of gravity and intersection, which forms by oneself partial transparency the gathering square. Three main passages are gravitated to the square. In the same time “Lighthouse” protects the plot in the north side and in itself is a protector against collision. Sails shapes are cloth to landscape, air, water, able for evolution and adaptation . Their edges transform from the free aerial auditorium, public spaces to the green banks. The “Sails” form the compound dynamic structure with adaptation to cross passages from the riverbank. From the Grasweg the “Sail” structure includes the resemblance of gables (22 and 15 meters height), as a historical reflection, and the breach (an arch symbol) exposing the visual joining tie from the city center through the river IJ, the rest of complex at end of Grasweg to Nort Amsterdam. Landing stages plays a role of terminal square. It is connected by the passage with the “Leading light”, public, the cultural amenities, the shoppings, the offices, undirectly with the parking zone and Groene Draeck building.Offices are placed over the visual passage through Grasweg connecting with parking and Groene Draeck, morphologically adapted to existing building. The pedestrian and bicycle traffic connects the part between Overhoeks and “leading light”. It is represented by double connection. The first one is directed way, and the second one is the spiral, which organized semi-open protecting space, accessibility to buisiness. The spiral symbolizes movement, defines the vector of development and openness to variability. As the approaches to the “Leading light”, it is filed by evaluating doings: small retail trading points, museum dedicated to Amsterdam migrants, children creative work club with workshops, bar, underwater restaurant.
