In times of ongoing compression of our living environment, rising prices for housing and property and the more and more being aware of climate change, building a single family house looks quite questionable. The project ‘Haus in der Stoppel’ though does replaces a house, which was bad in its substance, built and modified in the 1930s and 1970s. The footprint has reduced and unites – in the middle of the drinking water protection area of the town of Bregenz – all necessary – but not gratuitous – functions of a single familie house.
The decision to build a wooden house was at the beginning not easy for the owners. Their whish was to build a massive house (in construction), which generates a comfortable room climate. The advantage of the timber was though, that the owners could also provide handcraft by themselves. This way they saved a lot of money and with wood of the surrounding area the constructor guaranteed for a sufficient and sustainable handling of natural resources.
At the beginning of the planning process the following principle was set: It has to be a house, which lasts long and with low cost of maintenance. Needless bric-a-brac was not installed, the roof was roofed with a proven tin roof system (with a warranty of 40 years), as a stove in the living room functions as backup for times of need. The vertical aligned cladding of the wooden façade is a so-called ‘Deckelschalung’ which is very common for barns in the area.
The surface of the driveway and the garden are not sealed. A crushed aggregate lawn allows heavy vehicles to drive on it, the healthy tree population was preserved and functions as a reliable dispenser of shade in the hot times of the year. The front lawn is oriented to the south. Different types of gras and flowers grow there and give different useful animals a sheltered home.
The ‘Haus in der Stoppel‘ is a successful product of unique cooperation between architect and owners. The planning-principles could be followed from the beginning on and have not really been questioned by the owners. Therefore a new place came to exist, where a young family has found a wonderful home and also the craftsmen and planers were able to do their work properly.
