Eliciting the most iconic imagery of a house, the taut exterior of this gabled cube is now recognizable throughout the city of Greensburg, Kansas since its completion in May of 2008. As part of the eco-friendly rebuilding of Greensburg, Studio 108, Kansas State’s first Design+Build Studio, integrated sustainable architectural structures and systems into 10’x10’x10’ modules placed in the city for public education and use. The ‘Green Haus serves the community as a sustainable model home implementing a green ideology with its structure, materials, and finishes, as well as product placement for innovative green products found on the market today.Structurally Insulated Panels were used on the gabled ends of the haus to showcase the structural simplicity, reduction of material use, and incredible insulative qualities associated with SIPs. A half-lapped stud framing system supplements the structure and is leftexposed as ‘insulation cells’ showcase natural and commercial insulations and thermal mass. Sustainable
floor and wall finishes are expressed as ‘eco-friendly’ alternatives to normative commercial products.
