In all human societies, man has modified his surrounding in order to suit his needs, most fundamentally in the creation of dwellings. However, our expectations and definitions of what constitutes a dwelling are constantly changing and today, in a world governed by unseen network forces, it is changing again. This project seeks to reframe the definition of “dwelling” in the context of 21st Century social and technological revolutions. With the advent of wireless technology and the ability to communicate with anybody at any time, long held notions of housing and human interaction are no longer valid, nor are the needs to be tethered to information and energy grids. This project will entail the design and creation of a visionary minimal dwelling, which will be constructed during spring quarter. Once completed, the dwelling will play host to a series of events to test its ability to satisfy the needs and desires of contemporary society. Through documenting these exemplar events I hope to demonstrate the dwelling’s ability to satisfy the personal needs of an individual, a couple drinking tea, a family eating a meal, and the gathering of a large social group. The most essential aspects of the dwelling I will demonstrate personally through inhabiting it for one week while continuing as a student. The importance of this project is simultaneously far-reaching and personal. As a critique of contemporary living environments, it has the potential to influence the design and conception of current and future dwellings. On a personal side, this project will allow me for the first time to apply my architectural education to the construction of a realized object, enabling me to position myself in the world as a designer and to come to terms with the most fundamental of human acts: the construction of dwelling.
