Situated on an eight acre hilltop lot in Chappaqua, New York, the house
commands the site and has views onto the gardens. The original 4,000 square foot glass and fieldstone
house, named “Windsong” by the original owner, was built in 1961 in the
modernist tradition with details similar to the work of John Black Lee and the
other Harvard Five members. Stonefox
was hired to restore and renovate the original structure and create two
sensitive additions for the growing family. Stonefox was also tasked with integrating the owner’s
extensive collection of Asian antiquities into the redesign of the interiors. A new glass addition housing a Library
is nestled into a new sunken rock garden which becomes part of the surroundings.
Ash gray slate provides a neutral ground for the owner’s collection of
carpets and extends from within the house to the exterior terraces creating a
seamless connection between landscape and interior. Wide planks of Black Walnut flooring add warmth and intimacy
to the kitchen, family room, and bed rooms. Teak casework with black lacquer details and silk
upholstered panels complement the collection of Burmese textiles, Tibetan lacquer
ware and manuscripts. The kitchen
casework continues this theme with custom quarter sawn Teak millwork. The restored living room and dining
room are furnished with casual yet intimate seating areas positioned to enjoy
the surrounding views and gracious interior space.
